Its time to (actually) Raise the Roof ……. now arriving at Platform 2 ………

Milestone – “a significant stage or event in the development of something” is exactly what this latest news article is all about.

The main support steelwork for the new canopy on platform 2 has now arrived at Bury Bolton Street station and assembly has now begun.

These substantial structural elements have been manufactured by local structural steel engineers, William Hare who have donated their time and expertise to undertake the work on our behalf. We are extremely grateful for this level of support from William Hare and look forward to welcoming them to the railway in the ELR as members of our Corporate Sponsorship Club.

Bury based William Hare have for more than 50 years’ experience in  manufacturing expertise and technological leadership in the construction and steelwork field across the world.

They have been supported by Ramsbottom based consulting engineers Booth King who have a huge portfolio of construction projects across the UK.  Their role has been to validate and ‘sign-off’ the structural design in order to ensure it will withstand the vagaries of the weather and also that it complies with current building regulations.

As mentioned erection work has now started and this has immediately provided a new dimension to the project. , Until now there has only been barely perceptable preparation work going on which has included the completion of the foundations ready to accept the posts and also the restoration of the recovered Oldham Mumps Canopy.  Now, we can start to look upwards as the fruits of months of planning start to be realised in this ambitious undertaking.

The canopy posts will undergo painting once in situ and will match the immense structure already in place on platform 3&4 so well received, especially since its £45,000 refurbishment 2-years ago! We hope that the ‘new’ canopy will make just as much of an impression on our visitors as the ‘old’ one does as we continue to develop the facilities the railway has to offer.

In anticipation of the steel works arrival, sections of the main canopy have been assembled on platform 1, which once the steel posts are in situ, can be lifted into place by the ELR’s 75 tonne crane. Over the next few weeks we will see the most noticeable phases of the project as the canopy properly starts to take shape. By Easter the main structure will be complete leaving one of the last major funding hurdles to overcome – the purchase of the glazing.

Quotes for glazing the canopy come to the considerable sum of £27,000 which is the funding spike which we are now eager to overcome. In order to complete the project on time (July 2015) we will be pulling out all the stops to make sure we are in a position to order the glazing bars and panels during the spring and in time for when the main structure is in a sufficiently complete condition for the glazing work to start.  We would not want to lose the impetus on the project for shortage of funds.

However, we must not lose sight of the continuing need to fundraise. Completing the project on time can only happen with the support and generosity of you, our loyal supporters. There is still a funding shortfall which we need to fill and so with your help we can place the order on time and see the roof over platform 2 well and truly raised.

The level of enthusiasm shown by members and supporters of the railway has been overwhelming and we cannot thank those enough who have donated for the levels of generosity shown so far. The completion of the canopy will be a major step in the right direction to safeguard the preservation of the railway for future generations.
